When I set out to start this blog I searched high and low for advice on which theme I could get my hands on for free and would still offer all the customisation I required to create a professional looking blog that importantly gave me the ability to put ads in the sidebar. I found plenty of articles promising the goods, pointing me towards theme x, y and z which all looked top notch. Only problem being that despite the titles of their posts saying ‘free’, they all costed upwards of $40 except maybe one or two which actually included free themes in their list but turned out to be less than attractive.
I was pretty vexed by this deception but determined not to give in and holding my wallet close to my chest, I continued my search until low and behold I found an assortment of awesome themes right there in the WordPress theme archive. Who’d have thought? They are classified as magazine themes, aimed mainly at news sites and you guessed it, online magazines. Looking at the layouts though, they looked perfect for an affiliate blog site. So cutting to the chase, I went through all the possibilities and picked out a few that fit the bill.
And now behold, with not a single catch or paid theme in sight, here is that list.
1. ColorMag by themegrill
2. Hueman by Nikeo
3. eMag by evisiontheme
4. OnlineMag by evisiontheme
5. VioMag by galussothemes
Personally, I went with ColorMag, it just seemed to pop a little more than the other similar ones. So far I’m really happy with the flexibility it offers and what I’ve been able to do with it. I hope you’d agree, the blog looks pretty slick if I do say so myself. It wasn’t a 5 minute job though. I toiled for a fair few hours to achieve the finished layout and of course, before directing any traffic here I had to write enough blog posts to fill up my desired front-page layout. I’d recommend for you in order to get started quickly, you use a single widget on the front-page so you can just write one post and start driving traffic.
Anyway, I hope you find this useful and it saves you a tonne of searching and some pocket money. If you decide to go with ColorMag and need any help setting it up drop me a message and I’ll do my best to be the good Samaritan.
Thanks for reading and as always, live long and profit.
